Flashback Friday: Low on Time?

This is one of the easiest hairstyle you'll find on here - which is nice when you are low on time!
Simply grab your favorite hair clip and comb one side of hair, just above the ear, up toward the center of the head.  Secure it in place with the hair clip and you're finished.
The rest of the hair can be straight or curly and it looks beautiful either way.

Pulled Uneven 5-Strand

I do these Uneven 5-Strand Braids quite often because I really like the look of them.  Here are some of my original attempts at this braid.
This one is just a bit different because I pulled at the large plates throughout the braid. This popped them out just a bit and gave the braid a swirled look.  I loved the outcome and thought you may like to try it as well!

Railroad Tracks

Begin by parting the hair in half from ear to ear.  Tie the bottom half into an elastic to get it out of the way.

Now start over by the left ear and start forming a Dutch Braid.

I have only added hair to the top/right side of my braid but you can do a regular Dutch Braid and add hair into both sides if you like.
When you have gathered all of the hair from the top half of the head, finish braiding the hair next to the right ear.  Take the elastic out of the bottom section of hair and repeat the steps.

You should end up with to braids next to the right ear.  Go ahead and cross one braid over the other and then pull the bottoms of the braids back up to the head.
Bobby pin them into place and flip the ends of the hair out.  It helps to wet the ends and then curl them over your fingers.
Now you have your railroad tracks!

Flashback Friday: Barrell Roll Bun

Even at age 4 she was into looking "elegant".  This is a really simple bun that gives that "wow" effect.
Start with wet hair and pull it all up into a high ponytail.  Now divide the ponytail into 6 even pieces.  Comb each piece straight up in the air and then roll it down - over itself - into the head.  Secure it into place with bobby pins.
Do that for ever piece and then you can place a ribbon around the bun or flowers in it like we've done here.  These are little spiral clips that we just twisted into the top of the bun.

A Little Something EGGstra

We first saw this hairstyle last year over at Cute Girl Hairstyles.  I've been dying to try it ever since but I had to wait for Easter to come back around.  :)
Start off by parting the hair down the middle.  We've used a zig-zag part but any part will work.  Now secure each side with an elastic so that you now have two piggies.
Choose your colors of eggs that you will be using before hand and try to have the same colors of elastics.  If you don't have coordinating elastics you can use clear ones.  Also, my princess has pretty long hair so we were able to fit 3 eggs on each side but you can also use two or only one.
Begin with one side and then just repeat the steps on the second side once the first is finished.  Separate the ponytail into 5 equal sections and tie an elastic around each section - about 1/2 inch below the original elastic.
This is where I changed it up a bit and added a second layer of elastics for each egg.  Using the netting effect, add five more elastics another 1/2 inch down.
Once all 10 colored elastics are in, you can slide your egg into place.  Gather all the hair together under the egg and secure it in with another elastic.  Now you're ready to move onto the next color.
Simply repeat the steps with the elastics, place your egg and secure it again by gathering all the hair under the egg and tying in an elastic.  Do the same for your third egg if you have one and you are all finished!
This hairstyle was a real hit at school and she was even able to use it a second day.  We just removed the eggs and she had really cool netted ponytails.
Also, here are some fun Easter clips that we made and you can use any ideas that you like!

Rock Star

My daughter had a "Rock Star" day at school this past week and here is the hairstyle we did.
We've done this faux-hawk style before but we've tweaked it a bit with some faux hair for a fun rock star look.
Start by dividing the hair into 4 parallel sections horizontally across the head.  Gather each section up into it's own ponytail in the very center.  This will give you a row of 4 ponytails.
Grab some faux-hair clips and clip one underneath each elastic.  Pull the colored hair up through the elastic just to secure it tightly.
Now you're going to wet each ponytail down really well and Barrel Roll them.  To Barrel Roll you will comb the ponytail straight up into the air and then wrap the ends around your two index fingers.  Now roll your index fingers over each other down towards the scalp.  This will roll the hair nice and evenly for you.
Secure your Barrel Roll down into the hair with a bobby in on each side creating an "X" inside the roll.
Do this with your 3 other ponytails as well.
You will end up with a Mohawk look going down the head.   You want your colors to look more random and not perfectly placed.

Junie B. Jones

My daughter's school had "Dress up as Your Favorite Character From a Book" day and she chose Junie B. Jones.
I tried to talk her out of it because Junie has short hair and bangs - neither of which my princess has.
She insisted that she wanted to be Junie B. Jones so we simply cut her hair.  :)  (Just Kidding!)
First I pulled a small section of hair from the front left part of her bang-line and let it sweep across her forehead and over to the right ear where I secured it with bobby pins.  This gave her the "bangs" look.
Next I brushed out the rest of her hair so it was straight and placed an elastic around the bottom of it.  (Leaving about 2 inches of hair below the elastic.)
Then I grabbed a chiffon ribbon and fed it through the elastic so there was an even amount of ribbon on both sides of the band.  Now I simply pulled the ribbon up under her hair - to her neck - and wrapped it up on top of her head where I tied a bow.
This was a very fast and easy way to make her look like she had short hair.  I made an "X" with bobby pins over the ribbon right behind each ear just to make sure it would hold all day long.
Junie B. Jones also has glasses in 2nd grade so my princess popped out some lenses from some old sunglasses and had glasses for her big day.  I had to take a couple good looks at her because she did look A LOT different.  :)
This is her "Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus" impersonation!  :)

Loosey Goosey

I saw this hairstyle over at Princess Hairstyles and instantly fell in love with it.  It's basically a loose Dutch Braid.
Start by creating a part from the left half of the bang line that goes diagonally all the way down to the neck.  Clip the left half of that part off to the side to keep it out of the way because you will be working with the right side.

I started by creating a small Pull-Through at the top of the head first but this is totally optional.
Begin your Dutch Braid (Inverted Braid) and make sure that your plates aren't super tight as your work your way down the head.  You may also want to add in larger sections of hair than you normally would as you plate it.  When you've added all the hair in, plate the braid a few more times and secure it with a loose elastic.
Now, starting at the bottom you will want to pull at the plates of the braid to loosen them up.  There is supposed to be a disheveled look to the braid so don't worry if it's not looking perfect.
Once you've pulled at the plates and get it looking the way you like, you can unclip the left side of your part.  Comb that hair over to the right side where your braid is and secure all of it together with an elastic.  Brush any braid underneath the elastic out so that you are left with a simple side-ponytail.
Add a hair clip to conceal the elastic.  We've also added some flowered hair pins into the plate of the Dutch Braid for a fancy look for church.

Flashback Friday: Accessorize!

Nothing is more adorable than these little knitted beanies on little girls.  My princess had a little Thanksgiving party at her preschool and we put two low braids in her hair and placed a brown knitted beanie on top.
I then fed the two braids through openings in the bottom-back of the beanie to hold it in place.  We added fall flowers to the ends of her braids and a larger fall flower onto her beanie.  Look for opportunities to use all of these fun accessories and especially these darling beanies!

Braided Scarf

We just wanted to be a bit creative today so we decided to try adding a scarf into a normal French Braid.
This style works best if you start with wet hair.
Start by sectioning out the top of the hair by creating a part from ear to ear.
Secure that section with an elastic and then pull your scarf or ribbon through the elastic so that the very middle of the scarf is next to the band.
Now you'll want to separate the hair from the elastic into 3 strands for your braid.  As you gather sections into the braid you will want to alternate the scarf on top of the added section and underneath the added section.  Make sure you keep it the same for both sides of your scarf.
When you have added all of the hair into your braid, add in the two pieces of scarf and finish it off with a 5-Strand Braid.  (Using the scarf as the 2 extra strands.)
Secure it at the bottom with an elastic and add a hair clip to hide the elastic.

Upside Down Updo

I love this hairstyle because it works perfectly for dance recitals and we have lots of those around here!
I start with wet hair and have my princess lay on her bed with her head hanging over the edge so I can braid upside down.  Begin by parting the hair horizontally across the middle of the head - from ear to ear.  Clip aside the hair that is up by the face and only work with the half by the neck.
Create a French Braid and when you've gathered all the hair from the bottom half of the head just finish off the braid and secure it with an elastic.
Pull the hair on the top half of the head tightly into an elastic and create 2 Regular 3-Strand Braids.
Now wrap all three of your braids around each other and secure them all down with bobby pins.
Make sure that your loose ends are tucked underneath the wrapped braids.
Spray it with hairspray for a nice tight hold.  We also sprayed a bit of glitter in her hair for the performance.
Add some flower clips wherever you like and it's finished!
