Halloween Hairdos: The Great Pumpkin

"It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!"
This is a French Twist Crown that we've made into a pumpkin.  Start along the bang line for your French Twist and just continue it all the way around the head.  Be sure that your added strands are combed nicely so the finished product looks clean.
My princess's hair is quite long so we had to continue twisting long after I had finished adding hair and then we just bobby pinned down the excess.  Grab some orange ribbon, measure the length of your crown and then double it.  You will be using a plastic yarn needle for this hairstyle. Thread the needle by folding some dental floss through the eye, placing the ribbon in the dental floss and then pulling the floss with the ribbon back through the eye. Now weave around the pumpkin, tie the ends together, and cut off any extra ribbon.
If your princess has long hair as well and you have to double up some of the crown, just make sure you only weave once in that area.
Now for the stem you can use a green bow, some green ribbon, green yarn, or a pipe cleaner.  We've used a green pipe cleaner, poked it through the hair and then shaped it into a stem.  Wrap the extra pipe cleaner around a pen to curl it for little vines.

Tied Up and Twisted

Make sure the hair is wet and part the hair from ear to ear.  (You'll be working with just the top half of the head so these directions will apply only to that area of the hair.)
Divide the hair into two equal halves and set one half aside.
Now make a diagonal part going from the corner of the middle part up to the bang line.
Pull out a small section on the lower half of the diagonal.  It will be about 1 inch thick and just above the ear - set that aside for a minute.  Now take the top half of the diagonal part and divide it into two sections and tie them together (It's the same as the first step of tying your shoe.)  Now combine the tied hair with the lower section of the diagonal and secure it with an elastic.
Now grab that small bit of hair from above the ear and twist it together with the combined diagonal sections.
Hold it together with a clip while you move to the other side to repeat the steps.

Make sure your second diagonal part mirrors the original one.
Once you've done all the steps on the opposite side, combine the two twists together in the back of the head.  Spray for hold and then add a hair clip.

Tic-Tac-Toe

My princess came up with the name for this one because she said it looked like X's and O's.  :)  This hairstyle is easiest when the hair is really wet.  You can add a little mousse or product into the hair for extra hold if you would like.
Divide the hair into two sections and pull each side up into it's own piggie. Now grab 4 chopsticks - you can use the regular wooden ones for eating or you can pick up some of these ones specifically for hair.
I grabbed these ones off a clearance table and Sally's.
Poke the sticks through the hair, just behind the elastic holding the piggie.  Now take a small section of hair from the piggie and wrap it (in no organized fashion) around the sticks.  When you get to the end, just bobby pin it into the back of the piggie.
Continue doing this with more small sections of hair - making sure to secure each one with a bobby pin at the end.  You can either tuck all the ends in with the pins or leave some sticking out like we've done here.
With your last couple of strands you'll want to twist them before wrapping them.  This gives it more of an elegant look.  (You don't want to twist all the sections or else your bun will stick out too far.)
Give it a good spray and it will hold all day!
*This is also a great hairstyle for those moms out there - with only one bun of course.  :)*

Rock Star

My daughter decided that she wanted to have a "Rock Star" party for her birthday this year.
I instantly knew what she was going to wear and how her hair was going to be done.  She has a bunch of fun faux hair clips that we picked up at Sally's a few months back.  (I didn't know if we'd use them much but she LOVES them!)
We started by parting the hair and then clipping the fake hair to the front of the head .  I then twisted a small bit of hair around each of them to hide the clips.
I continued twisting the hair until it met right over the part and I connected the two sides with an elastic, then covered the elastic with a small claw clip.
No she doesn't really have a tattoo and three earrings.  :)
Then I pulled each side into an Indian Braid - making sure to include the faux hair.
I tried to get a little bit of faux hair in each of the strands of the braid.  Both braids looked a bit different but still similar.
We finished it off with some glitter spray and some Rock Star bows.

Combination Piggies

Start by parting the hair in any style you like down the middle of the head. My sister-in-law affectionately calls this part the "Butt Crack Part". :) Pull each side into a ponytail with an elastic. Take a small portion of hair from the back of each ponytail and wrap it around the elastic to hide it. Use your Topsy Tail to pull the excess hair through the elastic on the ponytail so that the wrap will hold tight. You can make your piggies into any combination you like - using any types of braids or twists that you like. Just make sure each section is finished of with an elastic. Here I've started with one Pull-Through section on top. (Place an elastic about 1 inch down from the ponytail elastic and then pull the hair through that section with your Topsy Tail.) Our second section is a regular braid. The final section is three individual braids. It looks the best when you can keep your sections uniform on each side. Now add your hair accessories wherever you like and your finished.

Rainbow Connection

The princess decided that this was the perfect name for this hairstyle because the headband is like a rainbow and the piggies are connected in the back. :) She had kind of a zebra theme going on that day. Start by sectioning out about 1/2 inch of hair in the very front. Have your daughter hold that while you pull the rest of the hair into two piggies in the back. Now take the hair from your daughter, separate it into two sections and pull it down tightly by each ear. Twist it tightly over the headband and to the back of the head. Now take both little sections and twist them over each other (as if you're starting to tie your shoe) several times. Take the remaining hair and wrap it around each piggy and use your Topsy Tail to pull it through the piggy. You can leave your piggies down or finish them off with any type of braid. Now I have to give a little shout out to www.kireisui.com where we got the princess's darling pettiskirt! She loves them so much that we had to get 5 different ones. :)

Fourth of July Star

My princess wanted to wear her red, white, and blue for her last day of school this week so we decided to make her hair festive as well. I've seen "Star" hairstyles out there and this was our version of one of my favorites. You do 3 Pull-Throughs at the top of the head. Divide the rest of the hair into two sections and pull them into ponytails. Divide the hair from the side Pull-Throughs into two sections each. The middle Pull-Through will be divided into 4 sections. Take the left half of the sections and twist each one. Pull them over to the bottom right ponytail and combine them with an elastic. Take the right half of the sections and twist each one. Weave them through the left sections as you pull them over to the bottom left ponytail and combine them with an elastic. We braided the ponytails into Quad Braids and attached some festive bows. This hairstyle got many comments from people at school and it held together really well too.

Triple Twists to Buns

Begin this style by parting the hair and creating two sections. At the top of each section, create three equal parts for your twists. The twists are made by starting and the part and gradually adding hair into the twist as you make your way down. Combine the twist and the rest of the hair in each section into Messy Buns. Give it a quick spray with hairspray and this style will hold all day long.

French Twist Into a Messy Bun

This style works best if the hair is completely wet. Start your French Twist anywhere along the bang line. Take the twist all the way to the opposite ear. With the remaining hair, do another small french twist to the same ear. Combine all the hair into a Messy Bun and doll it up with your favorite clip. Spritz it with a little hair spray and this style will go all day long!

Double Twists

This one is very easy and fast! Simply separate the hair into two sides and twist down each side, starting at the top of the head. I chose to have my two side off-centered but you can do it however you like. Wrap all the hair into an elastic at the nape of the neck and then finish twisting the two separate sections of hair to the bottom. Combine the bottom of the twists with another elastic and you have it!
