Ribbon Bun

This one turned out really pretty and I don't think the pictures do it justice.
Begin by sectioning out a bit of hair in front and create a small Pull-Through on one side.  Now you can either leave your Pull-Through straight or braid it like we've done here.
Wet the hair down and pull all of it back into a ponytail, being sure to include your Pull-Through as well.
Now separate the ponytail into as many small sections as you like - we've done 12 here.  Add a strand of ribbon to each section by tucking it through the elastic holding the ponytail.  (You will have ends of the ribbon sticking out but it will all be hidden when your bun is completed.)
Divide each small section into two pieces and, using the ribbon as your third piece, create a 3-strand braid.  Secure the end with an elastic.  Go ahead and do this with all of your small sections.
Now that you have all your braids, just roll them up into the head once or twice (depending on the length of hair) and bobby pin it down.  Let the little wispy ends of the braid stick out wherever you like.  Continue doing this with all the braids making sure that the are evenly pinned around the original elastic. We've also added some little flowers that are glued to hair pins and just tucked them in and around the bun for some more detail.

No Go Without A Bow

We've used several little bows in this hairstyle and you can never go wrong with a bow in your princess's hair.
Start by parting out a section of hair in the front from ear to ear.
Now part that section into two pieces making sure the part is off-centered.
Create one Pull-Through out of the smaller section and two Pull-Throughs out of the larger section.
Separate the Pull-Through on the smaller section into two pieces and create a Corkscrew and then have your princess hold it while you move to the other side.
On the larger section, create a Corkscrew out of the two Pull-Throughs.  Combine the two Corkscrews at the back of the head with an elastic.
Now you'll want to grab your little bows.  We bought some pre-made bows in the craft section at Walmart and then just glued some hair pins to the back.
Gather the combined Corkscrews along with the rest of the hair into a low pony and secure it with an elastic.

You can finish off your ponytail however you like but we've done a Fish Bone braid for 2 inches, tied it with an elastic and then left the hair straight for 2 inches and added another elastic.  We just continued that pattern until we reached the bottom of the ponytail.  When we were finished we slipped our ribbon pins into place.

Halloween Hairdos: The Mummy

This is one of my favorite Halloween Hairdos and I've been waiting to do this one for a while.
First you will need your bones.  Remember the skeleton garland I told you I got at the dollar store...
Well this is the head, arms, and legs from one of those skeletons.  (I used one of them in "The Coffin".)  So many wonderful uses for these little guys.  :)  I simply hot glued some bobby pins to them so that they could secure into the hairstyle.  Again, this hairstyle needs to have very wet hair to work properly.
Start with a small Pull-Through in the front just for looks.  Now go ahead and create "The Cast" which I posted a couple weeks ago.  (Please refer to that post if you need step by step instructions.)  Once you've finished "The Cast" go ahead and grab your skeleton parts.
Stick the skull right up in top and the legs up through the bottom so that only the feet are showing.
Now grab both arms and add them on each side, about 1/2 inch below the skull.
 Isn't this mummy awesome?!
I also think it looks really nice without the arms but you can choose to do it either way.

Halloween Hairdos: Bone Yard

There are a bunch of twists in this hairstyle and those represent the bones in our bone yard - you may have to use your imagination with this one.  :)
Start by pulling a section of hair from the front into a small side ponytail.  Use your Topsy Tail and create a Pull-Through.  Keep your Topsy Tail handy because you'll use it a lot in this hairstyle.  Divide the rest of the hair in half and tie one side off while you work with the other.
Create a part from the ear up to the middle part and tie it into an elastic - making sure to include the front section if it is on that half.  Create a Inverted Pull-Through by pulling your Topsy Tail up instead of down.
Create another part parallel to the one just above it but about 2 inches down.  Divide the new section into two equal squares and tie each off with an elastic.  Now grab the hair from the Inverted Pull-Through and divide it into two pieces.  Twist each one and add them to the squares just below with more elastics.
Now twist those two ponytails down and add them in with the remaining hair at the bottom of the head by securing them with one elastic.  Repeat the exact same steps on the opposite side of the head and you should end up with two ponytails.
Create a Corkscrew out of each ponytail and secure them at the bottom with elastics.
You can add some festive Halloween bows and leave it finished at this point.
We wanted to get a bit more creative so we grabbed some little whistles the kids got in a goody bag.
You can use the skulls or the pumpkins or whatever else you come across.
We just tucked them into the first Inverted Pull-Throughs and they seemed to hold tightly.
They help create the look of the actual bone yard.
Spooky yet darling!

Halloween Hairdos: The Coffin

I would suggest that you use this hairstyle on a day off from school because I think it would cause quite the distraction in the classroom!  :)
I found a group of these skeletons on a garland at the store.  I bought them to use as a decoration in the house but have ended up using them for hairstyles instead.  I simply cut them off of the garland and they were ready to go.
Start by parting the hair from ear to ear and then dividing that top portion into 4 equal areas.  Secure each area with an elastic and then create a Pull-Through.
Now take the ponytail from the middle-left section and divide it in half.  Take the right half of the ponytail and pull it over to the middle-right section and add it in by securing it with an elastic.  Take the other half of the middle-left section and add it to the far-left section about 1/4 inch down.  Go back to the middle-right section and divide that into half. (You will only use one half of this and the other half will just fall straight down.)  Grab the right half and add it to the far-right section about 1/4 inch down.  Now comb the rest of the hair down to the neck and make two tight ponytails - making sure that right section from above has been added into the right ponytail and the left section into the left ponytail.
Grab your plastic yarn needle again and plenty of black ribbon to outline your coffin.  Thread the needle by folding some dental floss through the eye, placing the ribbon in the dental floss and then pulling the floss with the ribbon back through the eye. Now simply weave around the entire outline of the coffin.
I've also left some extra ribbon on each end and wrapped it around the bottom elastics. I then braided the ponytails and included the ribbon in the braids.
Grab your skeleton and get ready to attach it. We've wrapped some dental floss around the neck and tied it to the top two elastics.  We've also glued some bobby pins to the back of the legs and pinned those right to the hair.  I'm sure there are several ways to attach this guy but this way seemed to hold quite well.
We added some cute little bows to the ends of the braids so that the whole hairstyle wasn't completely grotesque - but then again, that's what Halloween is all about right?!

Halloween Hairdos: Dancing Skeletons

We have come up with a whole bunch of fun Halloween Hairdos for you.  Many of them are done by recycling little Halloween decorations or favors.

You can find these cute little straws all over the place.  I've seen them at craft stores, Walmart, and the dollar stores.  They usually come in a pack of 4.  Grandma gave these to the kids and I immediately wanted to use them as a hair accessory.  (My mind is twisted like that.)  :)
Start by parting the hair from ear to ear and then dividing that top portion into 4 equal areas.
Secure each area with an elastic and then create a Pull-Through.
Now grab two skeletons and take them off the straw.  (I also glued a bow to one of them so we could have a boy and a girl.)
Start with one of your middle sections and grab the little ponytail.  Divide it in half and feed half of the hair through the top portion of the skeleton using a Topsy Tail.  When the skeleton is placed where you want it, grab the other half of the ponytail and tie an elastic around both halves to hold it in place.
Now divide the ponytail in half once more and feed half through the bottom portion of the skeleton.  Get it into place and secure it by tying an elastic around both halves of the ponytail again.
Follow these same steps for the second middle section of hair until both of your skeletons are securely attached.  Pull the two side sections and all the rest of the hair back into a low ponytail and finish it off with a ribbon.
As your princess walks around the skeletons will move ever so slightly and it looks as though they're dancing.  :)

The Cast

I was looking at my princess's hair after doing Red Light, Green Light and decided that I could take that to the extreme and  cover the entire ponytail.  That's how we came up with The Cast.  (It looks like a cast over a broken arm.)  :)
I always like to do a small Pull-Through on top of the head when all of the hair is being pulled back.  I think it adds a little flare to the style.
Start with a ponytail and simply create your first Wrap around to hide the elastic.
Make sure to pull all your Wrap Around ends through the elastic they're covering using a Topsy Tail.  This will make them hold tight and last all day long.
Under the first Wrap around you will want to add another elastic.  Have a Wrap Around on top of that one as well to hide the elastic.
Continue doing this all the way down the ponytail until it is fully covered except for the ends.  Add a hairclip and you're done!
I'm going to have a fun variation on this idea coming up in my "Halloween Hairdos" that I'll be starting next week.  :)  Keep your eyes peeled for it!

Jumping Through Hoops Re-Visited

I was looking at my princess the other night when she was wearing her "Jumping Through Hoops" hairstyle and I wondered what it would look like without braids.
So here we have a variation on the original and I actually like this one a bit better.
Begin by parting the hair in half anyway you like - We've just made up a fun little part.
Now pull each half up into a piggie.
Separate out 1/3 of one of the piggies and set it aside.  Now take the remaining hair from that piggie and create a Pull-Through Braid.
Now weave the strand that you set aside in and out of the elastics using a Topsy Tail.  Secure it at the bottom with another elastic when you're finished.
Repeat the same process on the other piggie.
Now grab your favorite hair accessories to glam it up and you're all set!
