Friday's Film: The Ghost

We wanted to do a fun, yet simple, Halloween hairstyle for you this year so we came up with The Ghost.
You will need a pair of white knee-high tights and I just found mine at the local dollar store.  Draw a ghost face on one stocking with a permanent black marker.  (Tip: Place some cardboard inside the stocking before drawing the face on to avoid any bleeding.)
Here are some pictures of the finished product topped with a ghost hair bow.
It held really well all day long and everyone was stopping my princess to take a look at it.
 Happy Haunting!

Puffy Ponytail

This hairstyle is borrowed from the fabulous Mindy over at Adopt A Do and she calls it the Bubble Braid.
It is super fast and she's got a great video there as well.
I did mine a little differently because of a time crunch.  Instead of ratting the hair I just placed the elastic in and pulled at it a bit.
It seemed to hold fine so that is an idea if you are REALLY short on time like we were.  :)
It's a fun idea and she's got lots more great ones over on her website!

Friday's Film: The Switchback

We got many requests for a video on our hairstyle called "The Switchback". It's a simple concept, just make sure you have lots of bobby pins ready to go.

You can find the original post here.
I wish that my arm wasn't in front of the camera so much but I wanted you to be able to see the back of her head.  Hopefully you get the idea!  :)

Knotted Crown

My princess came up with the idea for this one and wanted to give it a try.  This hairstyle is easiest with wet hair.
Start by making a straight part on the top of the head that goes all the way back to the crown.  The part can either be directly in the center of the head or a little off-centered like we've done here.
Now section out 3 parallel areas on one side of the part and secure each area into an elastic, giving you 3 parallel ponytails.  Move to the other side of the part and do the same thing.  Now make 3 more vertical sections going around the back that you will also secure into ponytails.
Start with the back-center ponytail and wrap it around itself then pull it through the middle, creating a knot over the elastic.
Now move to the adjacent two ponytails and create knots out of them as well.  (I had my princess hold the ends of my knotted ponytails until I secured them so they would not fall out.)
Pull the remaining hair from those two knots to the back knot and secure them in with that ponytail - just below the knot - with a tight elastic.  Move up to the next two adjacent ponytails and do the same thing.
Finish knotting the rest of the ponytails and adding the remaining hair into the back ponytail as shown here.
Add some hair clips over the ponytail to hide all of the elastics.
It turned out pretty cute and she was so proud of her creativity!

Flashback Friday: Pinkalicious Hair

This is our final Flashbck Friday post.  :)  It has been fun and hopefully you've enjoyed them as well!
My princess insisted that we include this post in our blog because it's one of her favorite pictures EVER!  :)
Her school had a special day where the kids got to dress up as their favorite story book character and my princess chose Pinkalicious.  (Along with several other little girls at the school!)  Because this is a hair blog I will tell you that we created two side piggies and then used the waver to give them some dimension.  Pretty simple to get a Pinkalicious hairstyle!

The Switchback

This hairstyle is super easy but looks like you put a lot of time and effort into it.  (The best kind of hairstyles!)  Start with dry hair and make sure you have a bunch of bobby pins handy.
Brush all of the hair straight and grab the top bit of hair from ear to ear.  (I've also made a small off-centered part on the top of the head.)
Pull it a bit more to the left than to the right and place bobby pins in an "x" pattern directly in the middle of the head to hold that hair flat.  (I used about 4 bobby pins.)  Now roll the hair to the right over the top of the bobby pins and secure that twist in place with more bobby pins.
Grab some new hair from each side - under the previous hair - and add the previous hair in with that.  This time you will want to pull it all slightly more to the right and get your "x" bobby pins in place right in the middle of the head.  Now twist the hair to the left over the top of the new bobby pins and secure that twist in place with more pins.
Continue grabbing new hair and alternating your left and right twisting until you get to the nape of the neck where you will secure it all into low ponytail.
Go ahead and add some curl to the ponytail and you're finished!  The is a fast one that we're going to add to our favorites!

Flashback Friday: Flipped Piggies

I love this style and there is really nothing to it.
We separated her hair into two equal halves by creating a zig-zag part down the middle of her head.  Each side was pulled up into a piggie and then we pulled out the large fat curling iron.
We curled the ends of the piggies so that they flipped out and then topped each one off with a bow.  She had a program at church that day and she looked darling for it.

Loosey Goosey

I saw this hairstyle over at Princess Hairstyles and instantly fell in love with it.  It's basically a loose Dutch Braid.
Start by creating a part from the left half of the bang line that goes diagonally all the way down to the neck.  Clip the left half of that part off to the side to keep it out of the way because you will be working with the right side.

I started by creating a small Pull-Through at the top of the head first but this is totally optional.
Begin your Dutch Braid (Inverted Braid) and make sure that your plates aren't super tight as your work your way down the head.  You may also want to add in larger sections of hair than you normally would as you plate it.  When you've added all the hair in, plate the braid a few more times and secure it with a loose elastic.
Now, starting at the bottom you will want to pull at the plates of the braid to loosen them up.  There is supposed to be a disheveled look to the braid so don't worry if it's not looking perfect.
Once you've pulled at the plates and get it looking the way you like, you can unclip the left side of your part.  Comb that hair over to the right side where your braid is and secure all of it together with an elastic.  Brush any braid underneath the elastic out so that you are left with a simple side-ponytail.
Add a hair clip to conceal the elastic.  We've also added some flowered hair pins into the plate of the Dutch Braid for a fancy look for church.

Faux Hair Fun

We've done several posts using these faux hair clips that we found at Sally Beauty Supply and my daughter absolutely LOVES them.
They happen to be just the right length for her hair but you can always trim them up if you need to.  This is just another style using those fun clips.  Grab a small section of hair right from the middle of the hairline, up by the forehead, and secure it with a small clear elastic.  Now clip your faux hair in right over the elastic.
Grab a section of hair from each side of your original section and have your princess hold those for you for just a second.  Create a part just behind your original section that is right in the middle of the head and is about 2 inches long.  Now section out the hair from that middle part down to the ear on each side - giving you two new sections.
You'll want to grab the right section that your princess is holding and bring it right over the faux hair clip and add it in with the new left section with an elastic.
Repeat on the other side by grabbing the left section that your princess is holding, place it over the faux hair clip as well and add it in with the new right section with an elastic.  (You're original ponytail and fax hair should not be added into these two new elastics.)
Create a braid out of each of those two new ponytails.  Your braid will only need to be about 3 inches long.
Have you princess hold those two braids while you part the remainder of the hair right down the middle.
Move back up to your very first ponytail with the fax hair and separate that into two sections - making sure that the faux hair is evenly divided and clearly visible.    Take the right section and the right braid and combine them together with all the hair on the right half of the head with an elastic.  Do the same on the left side as well.
Remember to have your colored hair on top so that it's easily seen.  Add some hair clips to hide your bottom two elastics to complete the whole look.

Flashback Friday: Princess Hair

So at this point we were really trying to get creative with the growing bangs because we were getting sick of the same old hairstyles all the time.  This one is just a simple French Twist but it's perfect for pesky bangs.

Start with wet hair and comb the bangs right down into the face.  Create a part right in the middle about three inches long.  (Behind the bangs.)  Now begin your French Twist with the bangs and continue adding in hair as you work to the right, along the scalp line.
When you get over to the left ear and have added in all the hair.  Secure it into a ponytail with an elastic.  Add a flower clip to his the elastic.  Those bangs will be out of the way for the whole day!

Flashback Friday: Low Side Pony

I think this was about the age that I started realizing that my princess was turning into a "kid" and was no longer a toddler.  I started going her hair just a bit differently than I had in the past and this is her first side ponytail.
Her bangs still had some growing to do but they were getting there.  We pulled all of her bangs off to the right and secured them with a bendy clip and then pulled the rest of the hair into a low side ponytail.
We curled the ends and then stuck an over sized flower over the elastic to finish it off.

Corset Lacing With Hair

Here's a simple style that looks like you put a lot of time into it but really it's pretty fast.

Start by parting all the hair right down the middle.  Grab two small sections of hair, right up front, on both sides of the part.  Pull each section into it's own elastic.
Move to the right half of the part and divide out another section of hair right below the first.  Divide both of your small ponytails in half and add the right-half of each ponytail in with that newly divided section of hair and secure it with an elastic.
Move over to the left side, part out a new section below the first and combine the remaining halves of the two ponytails in with that and secure with an elastic.
Now you have two small ponytails once again.  Just repeat the process of parting out new sections under the previous and dividing the two ponytails in half.  Make sure you always take the right halves of the ponytails to the right section and the left ones to the left section.
Continue doing this until all of the hair has been gathered into elastics and you have two ponytails at the bottom of the head.
Tie some ribbons over your final elastics and you're all finished!

Springs

Here's a simple one that you're going to love!
Give your princess her bath the night before you want to create your "Springs".

After her bath you'll want to pull her hair into two piggies and Create a Hawser Braid out of each.
A Hawser Braid is made by twisting two Corkscrews together.
Have her sleep in the Hawser Braids and in the morning her hair should be nice and dry.  (Hopefully... if not you can use a dryer to help it along.)
Now you can unravel your Hawser Braids and you should end up with 4 fun "Springs" on each side.
Of course, the perfect bow to top these off is a Korker bow!  :)
Korkers are made by wrapping Grosgrain ribbon around a dowel and popping them in an oven heated to 225 degrees for 25 minutes.
