Over the Rainbow

Pick out your favorite ribbons or coordinating ribbons for this hairstyle.  You're going to also need a thick plastic (usually light blue) yarn needle.  (Usually found in the yarn section at your local craft store or Wal Mart.)  You may also want some colored elastics like we've used, or you can use clear ones.
Start by grabbing 1/2 inch thick pieces of hair from the front of the head and tie each off with an elastic a couple inches from the hair line.
Do this all the way to each ear so that you create a headband of elastics.
Now part the hair in half using whichever part you like.  (This is the "Blocks" part.)  Divide the hair from the elastics to each side equally and make a piggie on both sides of the head.  You can leave the piggie straight or finish it off with your favorite braid.  (This is the Uneven 5 Strand Braid.)
Tip: Grab your yarn needle and a piece of dental floss.  fold the dental floss in half and then feed the bend through the eye of the needle.  Now put your ribbon through the floss, pull the floss back out of the needle and now your needle is threaded with the ribbon.  This make getting the ribbon through the eye of the needle much easier!
Do a weaving pattern with the ribbons - going above and below - along the elastic headband line.  Make sure you have some hanging ribbon next to each ear.  Thread your second piece of ribbon and weave it through as well, making sure to alternate the directions from your first ribbon.  Continue adding as many ribbons as you like until you've completed the look.
Now take the ribbons hanging by each ear and wrap them around the elastic of your piggie. Now you can tie them into a bow.
You can add ribbons to the bottom of your piggies if you've braided them and you're all done!

Feeling Groovy

I wasn't around for the 60's but I love the hairstyles. My daughter was "feeling groovy" on this particular morning so we decided to go a little hippie. Grab a small section of hair from one side of the head, just above the eyebrow line. (Make sure you don't grab your section from the front of the hair because you don't want to show. Gather it from about and inch behind the hairline.) You'll want to braid that small section as far down as you can. We chose to do a 5-Strand Braid because it is a little wider than your normal braid. Once you've finished braiding, pull it across the forehead and tuck it under the hair on the opposite side of the head. Attach the braid to the hair with bobby pins - making sure to make and "X" with the bobby pins for the best hold. Now separate the rest of the hair into two halves and pull them down into Indian Braids. Secure the ends with elastics and add hair accessories as you like. I've just glued some little white ribbon flowers to hair pins and tucked them into the braids. I thought it gave it more of a "Flower Power" look. :)

Uneven 5 Strand Braid

Here's a fun little twist on a favorite. You can pull the hair up any way you like - I've done piggies here. Now separate the hair into 5 sections, one being large and the other four being small. Now begin braiding. (See "5 Strand Braid" for more details.) It gives the braid a really cool pattern. We were at Wheeler Farm for Pioneer Day and everyone was commenting on her hair.

5 Strand Into a Messy Bun

This is easiest when the hair is completely wet. You can start this hairstyle with a small ponytail up front or you can do a Pull Through like we've done. Use the hair from that small ponytail to create your 5 Strand Braid. You can braid it as long as you want, depending on where you want to position it on the head. Pull the rest of the hair over to the side for a side pony. Add the Braid into the hair and make your Messy Bun. Add a cute little flower and you're all finished!

Lucky Number Seven

I figured that since we are from Las Vegas, it was only fitting to name our 7-Strand Braid "Lucky Number Seven". :) You can being this braid in a Ponytail, with half the hair pulled up (like we've done here) or with no elastic at all. Start with the section of hair you are using and separate it into 7 equal sections. (It's just like the 5-Strand Braid but with two extra strands.) Begin with the outside section on one side and take it under the adjacent section, over the following section and under the very next section. That outside piece should now be right in the middle. Grab the outside section from the opposite side and do the same thing - under the adjacent piece, over the next piece and under the very next piece until that section is in the middle. Continue this down the entire braid, rotating from right side to left side. You will want to tie an elastic around the bottom of your braid to finish it off. I think this braid looks really cool and my princess was getting comments on it all day long.

Challah Braid - 6 Strand

I'm sure you've heard of "Challah Bread", well this is our attempt at a "Challah Braid". It can also be called a 6-Strand Braid. I found a tutorial online here for the bread braiding so just apply it to the hair instead.  :)Braids that have and even number of strands of hair will turn out to be square as opposed to the flat braids that result from an odd number of strands. This is the top view of this braid and it's neat because it looks like a small braid sitting on top of a larger one. Here's the side view and it looks like an ordinary braid except that it's not flat. The back of the braid also looks like a regular braid but all of these sides are forming a cubed braid. It's definitely a "different" looking braid and we always like the unusual around here!

4 Strand Weave

I guess you could also call this a 4-Strand Braid but it seems more like weaving to me.
Her hair is still wet because we were rushing out the door to a primary activity and had to do something very fast. She wanted to incorporate one of her "colors" in her hair today. You can pick these up at Sally's in tons of colors and they're about 18 inches long. (You can cut them if they're too long for your princess's hair.) They have a little comb at the top of them that slides right into the hair or you can combine it in an elastic like we've done. The weave is made by sectioning the ponytail into 3 strands with the colored hair being your 4th strand. Simply take the 4th strand and weave it over and under the other 3 strands. Continue weaving back and forth until you come to the end of the hair. This looks really cool with your 4th strand being normal hair as well.
This style took less than 5 minutes and she was out the door.

5-Strand Braid

I've just learned how to do this braid and it's already one of my favorites.
First, gather all the hair up into a tight ponytail. Once it's in the elastic, section it out into five equal pieces. This is where it gets a bit tricky... Start with the outside section on one side and take it under the adjacent section and over the following section. That outside piece should now be right in the middle. Grab the outside section from the opposite side and do the same thing - under the adjacent piece and over the next piece until that section is in the middle. Continue this down the entire braid, rotating from right side to left side. I know that probably sounds really confusing and it does take a little practice to get your fingers where you want them. Good luck and it's worth the practice!

Swimming Hair

This hairstyle is also called "Netting" but I call it swim hair because it's perfect for the pool. Start with a crown of 5 elastics creating a crown at the top of the head. Next, divide the small ponies into two sections each and combine them with a section of new hair to create your second row. You will have 6 elastics on your second row. You can create as many rows as you would like but I usually stick to 2 or 3. Combine the remaining hair into a ponytail which you can braid, curl or leave straight. I've done a quad braid here. Add your favorite hair accessory and you're done! (Just remember to take the accessory out before swimming.) As you can see, it holds up great in the pool!
Tip: Take the elastics out with a seam ripper from your sewing kit!

The "Quad"

The "Quad" has always been a ski lift at Brighton to me so it's strange to have a hairstyle with the same name. Part your hair however you like and pull each section up into a ponytail.

Now you're going to divide the ponytail into 4 equal parts instead of 3 parts. Here's where it gets confusing so I'm just going to say to watch any tutorials on YouTube. You might notice a little glitter in her hair and it's simple spray glitter found in the craft section at Wal-Mart. It hardly shows up in the picture but it's the greatest stuff and it washes out with regular shampoo.
She looked great for her dance performance and she was VERY sparkly!
